Geography lens on measurement & science: China 29.4% / US 29.1% of ~$3.48T PPP GERD, East Asia ~41% of funding, China 31% of S&E pubs and ~75% of CET AI priority patents — while KTI value-added still crowns the US at 28%.

Our theme already maps who funds and publishes science at the top of the distribution. The 2026 concentration print scored GERD PPP Top-1 / Top-3. The Q3 concentration restatement carried the knife-edge. The August 202608 concentration companion then asked whether China’s 2025 domestic ¥ flow and CET patent meters change tip geometry without splicing yuan into PPP shares. This post answers the map question desks trade next: where does R&D funding, publication volume, and patent activity sit geographically — and do those maps agree?

The interactive dashboard above is built as a geography lens, not another Top-k ladder. Toggle Countries, Regions, Share paths, and Funding vs output. The punchline is deliberately multi-map. On GERD PPP funding, China holds about 29.4% of a ~$3.48T world — a 0.3 pp knife-edge over the United States at 29.1%. On regional blocs, East Asia clears about 41% of world GERD. On S&E publication volume, China tips harder at 31% while the US falls to 12% and India enters Top-3 at 7%. On CET AI priority patents, China jumps to about 75%. On KTI value-added, the United States still leads at 28%. Same theme, five different geographic tips.

Read the table as a family of maps, not one slogan. Funding geography says China and the US are co-dominant at the country tip, with East Asia the thickest bloc. Publication geography says China already leads by a wide margin and India punches into Top-3. Patent geography splits: CET critical-and-emerging fields tip hard to China; USPTO utility applicants still tip to the US. KTI value-added geography puts the US first even while China leads manufacturing VA inside the same perimeter. Averaging these rows into “science has moved to China” is true on pubs and CET patents and false on KTI VA and USPTO utility.

Countries: Tip-1 relocates when you change the perimeter

Open Countries. On GERD PPP, China 29.4% and the US 29.1% sit within rounding of each other; Japan 6.7%, Germany 5.5%, and Korea 4.7% fill the next rungs; Top-3 (China + US + Japan) clears about 65%. Flip the perimeter to Publications and China rises to 31% while the US drops to 12% and India appears at 7% — Top-3 becomes China + US + India at 50%. Flip again to CET AI patents and China alone is about 75%. Flip to KTI VA and the US reclaims Tip-1 at 28%, with China 25% and EU-27 18%. Flip to USPTO utility and the US leads at about 47%.

That relocation is the operational hinge. Desks that underwrite “China won science” from publication volume are reading one map. Desks that underwrite knowledge-and-technology industry value-added are reading another. Desks that underwrite USPTO utility grants are reading a third. The August concentration companion already showed tip disagreement across perimeters; geography makes the disagreement spatial.

Regions: East Asia owns the funding bloc; North America still owns KTI Tip-1

Toggle Regions. On GERD PPP, East Asia holds about 41% of world funding (~$1.42T of the $3.48T perimeter). North America is about 32%, Europe about 18%, South Asia about 2%, and the residual closes the rest. Flip to publications and East Asia stays thick (~36%) while South Asia’s India tip lifts that bloc’s share; North America’s share collapses relative to its funding weight because US publication volume did not keep pace with US GERD share. Flip to CET AI patents and East Asia jumps toward ~80% — the regional expression of China’s ~75% country tip.

Inside the US funding tip, state geography still densifies. California alone is about 22% of US domestic R&D on the desk roll-up; Massachusetts, Texas, New York, and Washington fill the next band. Flip the US-state metric to Intensity % and Massachusetts leads; flip to Dollars and California’s absolute stack dominates. World GERD geography and inside-US R&D geography are nested maps — do not confuse a California campus story with a China/US knife-edge.

Share paths: the knife-edge was earned over a decade

Toggle Share paths. From 2010 to 2024, China’s GERD PPP share rises from the mid-teens toward 29.4% while the US share eases from the low-thirties toward 29.1%. Publication shares cross earlier: China’s pubs share overtakes the US well before the GERD knife-edge closes. The East Asia versus North America bloc path shows the same story at regional scale — East Asia GERD climbs through the high thirties into ~41% while North America eases toward ~32%.

The intensity × share scatter beside the path makes the quality of concentration visible. Korea sits high on R&D/GDP intensity with a mid-single-digit world GERD share. China sits mid-intensity (~2.8%) with the largest absolute share. The US sits higher intensity (~3.4%) with a near-tied share. India sits low intensity with a pubs share that punches above its GERD weight. Filter the scatter to East Asia or Europe to see regional clusters without the China/US visual field dominating.

China’s 2025 domestic flow (¥3.9262T, +8.1% YoY, intensity 2.80%) is an aside on this geography vintage — a national ledger tempo, not a new PPP world share. The August theme update tracks that flow; this lens refuses to splice it into the OECD/AAAS country map.

Funding vs output: the mismatch meter

Toggle Funding vs output. Positive gaps mean output share exceeds GERD share. China’s publication gap is a modest +1.6 pp (31% pubs vs 29.4% GERD). The US publication gap is about −17 pp (12% pubs vs 29.1% GERD) — funding share without matching fractional publication share. India’s gap is about +5 pp on pubs. China’s CET AI gap is the extreme: about +46 pp (75% CET vs 29.4% GERD). The US USPTO gap runs the other way: about +18 pp of utility-applicant share above GERD weight. The US KTI gap is near flat (−1 pp).

This is why a single choropleth fails. Capital formation for research (who spends GERD) is a China/US knife-edge with an East Asia bloc tip. Publication geography is already China-led. Critical-and-emerging patent geography is China-extreme. Knowledge-industry value-added and USPTO utility geography still put the United States first. Stress that starts in a CET patent thicket is an East Asia story; stress that starts in KTI services VA is still a US Tip-1 story.

Who is exposed — and what would change the story

Exposed: Allocators who treat “global science” as geographically diversified when East Asia alone holds ~41% of GERD and ~75%+ of CET AI priority patents; US research agencies that read US GERD share (~29%) as proof of publication leadership when US fractional pubs are ~12%; corporates that equate USPTO utility leadership (~47%) with CET field leadership; development desks that underweight India’s publication tip because its GERD share is still low-single-digit; Europe-focused industrial strategies that assume EU KTI VA share (~18–22% bloc) diversifies CET patent risk.

Relative winners under current maps: East Asian priority-patent filers in CET AI fields; US KTI services platforms that still clear Tip-1 VA; California / Massachusetts R&D corridors inside the US tip; India on publication volume relative to GERD weight; Korea on intensity even when absolute GERD share is mid-single-digit.

What would change the story: a sustained US GERD reclaim that opens more than a few points over China on PPP shares; CET AI priority-patent geography where China’s tip falls materially below ~50%; publication Top-3 where India displaces further without GERD catch-up; KTI VA where China overtakes the US on a multi-year print; USPTO utility applicant share where the US tip falls toward the mid-20s. None of those are the central print on this geography vintage.

Caveats and methodology

  • GERD PPP shares are carried from OECD/AAAS 2024 restatements (China 29.4% / US 29.1%); they are not spliced with China NBS 2025 yuan domestic GERD (¥3.9262T).
  • Regional blocs are desk roll-ups of disclosed country anchorsnot a single OECD choropleth filing; treat East Asia ~41% as order-of-magnitude geography.
  • Publication shares use NSF Indicators 2024 fractional counts; field mix and language bias can shift country ranks inside disciplines.
  • CET AI priority-patent shares follow NSF Translation; they are field geography, not all-patent geographyUSPTO utility tells a different story on purpose.
  • KTI VA is industry value-added geography (~$11.7T world); manufacturing vs services composition differs sharply between China and the US.
  • US state R&D shares are domestic US roll-ups (CA ~22%), not shares of world GERD.
  • Share paths (2010–2024) mix disclosed anchors with carried interpolations; use them for direction, not basis-point precision.
  • Intensity × share scatter mixes OECD / NBS / NSF intensity prints; Korea’s high intensity and China’s volume tip are not the same concentration claim.
  • HHI figures on the meter panel are analytical on stated buckets (0–10,000), not regulator filings.

The shareable takeaway

Measurement-and-science geography is East-Asia-heavy on funding blocs and China-tipped on pubs and CET patents — but Tip-1 still relocates by perimeter. On GERD PPP, China is about 29.4% of ~$3.48T, a knife-edge over the US at 29.1%, with East Asia as a bloc near 41%. On publications, China is 31% and India enters Top-3. On CET AI priority patents, China is about 75%. On KTI value-added and USPTO utility applicants, the United States remains Tip-1. Progress is funded and published through a system that looks globally distributed in press releases and concentrated once you rank country shares, regional blocs, and funding-versus-output gaps — maps that disagree on who sits first.
